Chapter Five
I woke to the sun rising and illuminating the room with a soft, warm glow. For a moment I could pretend that the horrors of the past week were nonexistent. That my mum and dad were downstairs, making their breakfasts before they headed off to work. That my mum would have ironed my dad a shirt this morning, and he would have made her a coffee while she showered. That was the sort of couple they were: They did things for each other. Depended upon one another. He made the coffee and she did the ironing. He made her breakfast in bed every Sunday and she always cooked his favorite meal on a Wednesday because he finished early.
And meâ¦where did I fit in with that?
I was their world.
They had only ever wanted the best for me. To keep me safe, protected. My eye on the prize and ready to succeed in life so I could have just thatâ¦a happy, successful life, with a love-filled marriage like theirs, kids, a dog, a white picket fence. They wanted me to have what they had. And I had run from it. From them. And for what? For this hell?
Nolan snored lightly in his sleep, dragging my grief-filled nostalgic thoughts back to the present.
He was on his side, spooning my small frame with his large one, our feet tangled together on top of the bed. One huge arm was slung over me protectively, cocooning me in safety. I was warm, comfortableâ¦safe. Thatâs how he made me feel. Safe. Like he would make everything okay if I just trusted in him.
And despite barely knowing him, I realized that I believed that of him. I believed in him. That heâd do his best to keep me safe. To keep us all alive.
I stared across the room, my gaze on the wall opposite as I listened to the scary world outside, and the noises and footsteps within the foreign house, and I let Nolan sleep a little longer. He was peaceful in a way Iâd never known him to be, and I liked it. I turned in his arms so I could look at him. So I could see his relaxed features, slack instead of taut with rage or frustration. His eyes moved behind his closed lids, his full lips parted ever so slightly. Nolan was older than me, yet sleeping he was practically a boy. His face was soft and innocent, free of pain and worry. My chest felt tight and I swallowed and ignored the shiver that trailed down my arms.
Nolan was so much more than the man Iâd originally thought he was, and I was recognizing it more and more each day, realizing that the man Iâd met had been a fake, a fraudster wearing his clothes. Nolan wasnât the sexist arsehole heâd come across as, he was so much more complex than that. He was just as broken as the rest of us and twice as frightened. But by God, he was strong.
